You've brought your rambunctious bundle of fur home and, as puppies do, it's gotten into all sorts of strife and it's now time for its first bath! This can seem like a daunting task but as long as you are prepared we promise it will go smoothly.
Step 1
Make sure you have everything you need on hand: Puppy shampoo (and conditioner if using), pet comb/brush, wash cloth, cup, towel and anti-slip mat (optional) and some treats to reward them.
Step 2
If you are using an anti-slip mat put this in the tub or bath and make sure the water is to temperature. Please know that the temperature should only be warm as they will feel the heat of the water a lot more than you.
Make sure you brush your pup's fur to ensure there are no tangles. Fill the tub till it's about 5-10cm depending on the size of your pup and check the temperature again to make sure it's not too hot or cold.
Step 3
Very gently while speaking softly and calmly place your pup in the tub. While they are getting used to having their feet wet gently scoop water over their back all the while giving them plenty of praise and a treat or two.
Once you feel they are settled either using a scoop or a water attachment gently wet your pup from head to tail avoiding your dogs eyes and ears ensuring they are thoroughly wet.
Step 4
With a damp wash cloth gently wipe over your pup's face and head. Do not use shampoo as it an cause ear and eye irritation. Remember, we want this to be a pleasurable experience for your pup so less is more at this stage.
Lather some shampoo and work through your pup's coat with gentle hand motions. Once thoroughly washed drain the water and using a cup with clean water rinse all of the shampoo out. This will help make sure shampoo doesn't run down their face in their eyes or ears. Make sure you thoroughly rinse everything out as any residue could irritate pup's skin.
* If your pup is a long hair breed repeat this process with conditioner to ensure there are no tangles.
Step 5
Wrap them up in a towel and give them lots of cuddles and praise whilst you rub as much of the water out of their coat as you can. If you can take them outside let them have a run around and shake - they will have a ball. If inside you can use a hair dryer, however, ensure it is on the lowest heat setting and carefully move it around - you don't want their skin to burn!
Once dry give them a good brush and a treat for being so amazing and finishing their first bath!

FAQ's
What age can you start bathing your puppy?
Puppies should not be bathed until they are at least 8 weeks old. Older dogs can self regulate their body temperature, however, very young puppies cannot. Because of this they may overheat or get too cold during the bathing process.
How often can I give my puppy a bath?
As a general guide every 4-6 weeks is sufficient. Be guided by the type of fur your puppy has as some breeds have oilier fur and skin than others. As your puppy gets older they will generally need washing every 2-3 months depending on their coat.
